Do Programmable Thermostats Save Money?

The short answer is yes

More precisely, they save families an average of $300 to $400 a year on energy costs. According to Energy Star, an average household spends close to $2,200 a year on energy bills, half of which goes toward heating and cooling empty and unused spaces. In other words, people are spending too much to heat and cool their homes and are wasting energy in the process. If your energy bills are getting out of control, a simple, programmable thermostat may save you thousands of dollars over the lifespan of your heating and cooling systems. And there is more to these devices than just saving money. They make it easy to preset the best temperature for you when you sleep, wake up, go to work and come home. Using less energy means you are helping the environment.

WiFi Thermostats Available – New Trend

As more and more people connect to the Internet for services, a new trend is emerging in thermostat design and functionality. Now, many thermostat models come with the capability to connect right to your home’s WiFi, allowing you greater control over your home’s heating and cooling needs even when you aren’t home.

The Advantages of Upgrading Your Thermostat

If you’re tired of having to worry about constantly adjusting your thermostat, consider the advantages a programmable one has to offer:

  • Programming: You can set your thermostat setting according to time of day and day of week.  That allows for pre-determined settings that automatically change your HVAC output without you having to worry about it.
  • Savings: Programmable thermostats have been shown to save homeowners up to $180 per year based on an annual average of $2,200 in home heating and cooling costs. That more than makes up for their initial purchase price.
  • Design: Unlike the box-like thermostats that sat as an eyesore on your wall in the past, new programmable thermostats come with backlit display panels that have touchscreen controls.

  1. This unit is great. Honeywell Wi-Fi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat is very easy to program (everything is on touch screen). It was also easy to install. Installation took me about 15 minutes (and I’m not very handy). The installation instructions were not very clear, but it didn’t matter because all of the wires on my old system were labeled. It works like a charm too. I have 2 of them and both work great! Installs in about 5-10 minutes even for a novice.

  2. This was an upgrade from a 5-2 programable thermostat. Honeywell Wi-Fi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat 7 day programability is a great option for that house with varried schedules, like ours. It took 15 minutes to install and about the same to program – worked great first time. This thing is loaded with options that we’ll likely never use, but some might. A nice feature is being able to remove the unit from the wall for programing. We’ve had it for about three months now and it works flawlessly. The touch screen is cool and works great. The backlight is powerful – makes programing in a darkened room quite easy. Temporary temperature adjustments are easy … using the unit is quite intuitive, even for my technophobic wife. All in all, a great unit.
