Each generation has been a further refinement of Amazon’s design philosophy for Kindle: by making the device a more comfortable experience for the reader. First they did it by trimming the size and weight. Then came the illuminated screen, eliminating the need for separate lights. Then the Voyager version further reduced the size and weight, while adding auto-adjusting illumination.

Now comes the advances of the Oasis, which retains a 7″ screen size, but perfected its size even further where it can be easily held in one hand. It light, thin and small case is a great new feature. Some grumbled about the battery being split between the Oasis and its cover, but the 2016 Oasis came the closest yet to disappearing while reading.

The new Oasis finally brings a fully waterproof device that most customers wished they had with the Voyage, and are really appreciating the Audible integration.

The device has more control you can easily grip the unit with one hand using the hump on the back and then use your other hand just to support the other edge. This allows you to access the page turn buttons with your thumb. You can also flip the unit upside down if you’d like to hold it with your other hand and the display will flip accordingly so your book is always right side up.

  1. Love the New Improvements

The increased screen size, additional LEDs, and improved clarity is impressive. The ability to change the boldness of the font, nothing short of a paradigm shift in readability!

I haven’t experienced any of the screen fading issues described by some.

The ability to adjust the boldness of the font face, a absolutely wonderful addition (seriously), but that’s been standard on Kobo readers for 6+ years.

I just think some of these new design should have happened sooner.

  2. Things that I love about the Kindle Oasis Compared to the Paper White.

I imagine most people reading these reviews have already owned a kindle and I would guess that a majority of those people have owned a paaperwhite (a fantastic device in its own right). So that being said, here are some things that I love about the oasis compared to the paper white.

    1. I LOVE the larger screen. when coupled with the small font size, it is extremely close to what a real page in a book would be. the 7′ display seems to be the perfect size. And because of the decreased size in bevel around the other 3 sides, it is actually shorter than the paperwhite.

    2. The feel of this in your hand as opposed to the paperwhite is not even comparable. This thing just feels amazing. Matter of fact it feels so good that I most often keep it out of the case when I read it (yes it feels that good). I have held the naked device for several hours at a time and the comfort remains the same. I am actually going to be ditching the wrap around cover that I bought with it, and switching to a carrying pouch so, which will allow me to read with it “naked” all the time. Now that being said, it does not feel as if it would hold up to a drop from very high at all, so I am always extremely careful while holding it out of the case.

    3. I love the physical page turn buttons. I honestly did not think they would make as much of a difference as they do, but wow, they are awesome! One note of that feature which I did not know about until I began reading on mine, is that you can disable the touchscreen while you are reading. This is a small thing, but makes a huge difference while holding the device and not working about accidental pressing of the screen. This is of course made possible by having the physical page buttons as the paperwhite does not have (I cannot speak to this function availability on the Voyage as I have never owned one of these).

    4. The totally fluidity of the backlit screen, is simply beautiful. The paperwhite wold get dark spots and you could see the lights around it. The Oasis, however, is one perfectly lit screen with no visible lights and no dark spots, anywhere!
